According to a recent Chronicle article, Houston police arrested over 30 drivers on suspected felony driving while intoxicated charges during the month of February. The particular charges for each individual varied, depending on the circumstances. Some drivers had two or more previous DWI arrests or arrests on similar charges, whereas some drivers face aggravated DWI charges due to allegedly having a child in the vehicle at the time of the arrest or committing assault in the commission of the DWI. Overall, law enforcement authorities arrested two drivers on intoxication manslaughter charges, five drivers on DWI with a child in the vehicle, 29 drivers on DWI – third offense or more, and one driver on intoxication assault.
Particularly for those drivers who have previous convictions for DWI or related criminal offenses, the repercussions of another conviction can be quite severe. A DWI conviction can have long-lasting consequences for your ability to drive, your career, your pocketbook, and, in some cases, your freedom. Even for a first-time DWI conviction, you will face penalties that can include suspension of your driver's license, yearly surcharges of $1,000 for three years following your conviction, a period of probation, along with monthly probation fees, court costs, drug/alcohol evaluations, mandatory education classes and counseling, increased insurance rates, and even jail time.
