A San Angelo psychiatrist and a Denton nurse have been convicted of health care fraud in two separate cases.

Dr. Robert Hadley Gross of San Angelo pleaded guilty to health care fraud and has been sentenced to six years in federal prison and ordered to repay more than $1.8 million in restitution. He was indicted on over 50 counts of billing fraud, primarily involving nursing home residents or patients.

Gross was accused of billing Medicare and Medicaid on behalf of patients he never saw, or who had already died. These included clients in San Angelo, Midland, Abilene and Brownwood.

Florence Kroma — a/k/a Florence Kamara a/k/a Florence Koroma a/k/a Florence Bangura — has been found guilty of nine courts of health care fraud. A registered nurse, Kroma was found guilty of defrauding Medicare by submitting fake invoices for nursing services that were not provided and not authorized by the patients' doctors.

Prosecutors said that Kroma submitted invoices for services she allegedly provided when she was not even in the state. In addition, several patients testified at trial that they did not know Kroma even though she submitted invoices to Medicare on their behalf.

Kroma could face up to 10 years in federal prison on each count of health care fraud. A sentencing date has not yet been determined.
